WIAW #33 New Year, New Rules Update

by Brittany on January 16, 2013

Happy What I Ate Wednesday friends!

It is actually Tuesday night when I am typing this, and we are supposed to get some winter weather tonight.  I’m praying for snow!!  If it is going to be cold outside, I want snow.

**Update… no snow.  Bummer.

I was so excited to sign up for New Year, New Rules.  For one, it wasn’t going to change my diet too much.. just take processed sugar out.  Secondly, I was so excited to learn from Megan and Katie.

Honestly, I didn’t really expect to see much of a change in my body.  Boy was I wrong!!

My cravings have diminished!  I used to get shaky between meals and start craving breads or something starchy for a snack.  I don’t really have a “sweet” tooth.  I never crave candy, but breads are a whole different story!

I’m not saying that I never get hungry.  I do.  I just don’t turn into a ravenous beast between meals like I used to.  I think this is because I’ve been subbing out sugary things for more healthy proteins and healthy fats.

Breakfast:

Photo

Creamy Buckwheat Breakfast Bowl with banana, blueberries, and goji berries topped with coconut milk, almond butter, hemp seeds, and walnuts.

Usually I would put some Fig Butter or something sweet to top it, but now I just go with extra coconut milk and fruit.  Works the same and keeps my blood sugar in check.

Lunch:

Photo 1

Stir fry!  Leek, broccoli, mushroom, green beans, rice, and a huge farm egg stir fried with coconut aminos and sesame oil.  Topped with cashews.  Perfection.

I never really ate anything sweet at lunch, and my lunch has always held me over pretty well.

Snack:

An apple on the way home from work.  No picture… I was driving!

Dinner:

IMG 1515

Eggplant Dal.  This may be one of my favorite recipes…ever!

Snack:

To Be Decided….  Probably a microwave muffin of some sort…. with coconut butter.

I know it will be paired with Duck Dynasty!!  I’m addicted to that show.

Have you ever removed processed sugar from your diet?  If so, how did you feel?

Any good recipes I need to try out??  Link up!  :)

That’s so awesome that your sugar cravings are disappearing. Amazing. I’ve given up sugar before and it was definitely a great experiment but I found it hard to keep up in the long run. I did however cut out all sugar, including most fruit, stevia, etc…so perhaps an easier version of this would be better for me!

I couldn’t live without fruit!! That is awesome you were able to do that. I think the easier version was best for my body. You should give it a try!

I haven’t been eating much sugar lately and am surprised how little I crave it now! I also feel like when I have sugary things, they taste “too sweet” which I never thought was possible for this girl’s sweet tooth!

You have been eating some great food! By the way, I am a total hemp seed convert. Of all the things I have tried out there that keep me full and going, I can tell they actually made a difference.

I would say over all, I am not a huge processed sugar eater…which is not to say I don’t eat desserts – we all know I do, but when I bake for myself I tend to cut the sugar down and I don’t notice. I will say during my bad week last week, the more I go for the simple carbs for the quick fix, the more I crave them, and before I know it, my diet is completely unhelpful. :)

I am known to announce I need fat. :) The right healthy fat can do wonders in my opinion.

Yes.. I need good healthy fats too! I’m the same way about sugar!

It’s so awesome that you’ve been experiencing those positive changes! Cutting down on sugar is probably something I could try out. I don’t eat much in the way of processed sugar, but I tend to go a bit overboard on the fruit front. It’s just so hard not to eat them when they’re so sweet and good!

I eat a ton of fruit too! The only thing i cut out was processed sugars

I definitely have NOT tried to cut out processed sugar, although I think I do a really good job of keeping it in check, simply because most of my foods tend to be vegetables or grains that are pretty close to their original form. I have tried to keep my fruit intake less than my veggie intake, however, even though I know the natural sugars in fruits isn’t ‘bad.’

I would love to find coconut aminos somewhere. It’s a bit like soy sauce, right? That dal makes me miss India big time! I think I ate more dal there than any other curries combined! Soo sooooo tasty!

Yes it is Devon! I got mine at Whole Foods! Wanna run away to India together?? ;)

I really need to keep playing with removing processed sugar because I KNOW how much better I feel and it’s proven how I’ll feel pretty good, eat a piece of chocolate or something sugary and within MINUTES, my tummy starts churning and feeling off. It blows my mind every time how that works!

Very interesting to here how the diet changes are making you feel! This is something I would consider doing in the future.. when I am in a more stable place myself, not susceptible to taking things too far! I would like to simmer my cravings though, distracting at times
Oh and your breakfast looks delish :)

I just finished the 100 Days of Real Food Challenge! After 10 days without sugar, I really don’t have any cravings. My skin is the most clear it’s ever been and I have SO much energy. I used to always be tired but now I’m bouncing off the walls and need much less sleep!

Always in the process of removing processed sugar and anything. I think right now I’ve done a good job and boy do I feel the difference, emotionally, physically, mentally. (Maybe that’s emotional) but I don’t get these weird moods, my acne is better, I don’t get super anxious or stressed. Now I don’t avoid all sugar, but no candy, etc.
