Since it is National Adoption Month, I thought we should tackle an issue I have encountered since we have adopted.
Adoption isn’t a fall back plan. For us, it was God’s perfect plan. I think anyone who has adopted would tell you the same.
Sure, we deal with infertility. However, we never chose to do fertility treatments. We knew we wanted to be parents, and adoption has always been on our hearts. Adoption was our natural choice.
I have heard people say.. “Yeah, they couldn’t have children, so they had to adopt”. It’s almost like they are saying that adoption is second rate. I’m sure that isn’t what they mean, at least I hope not. That is how it is perceived sadly.
Adoption is becoming much more prevalent now, so this isn’t so much the case. However, I’m here to tell you, my son is not my fall back plan, second rate, or anything like that. He wasn’t my “well since I can’t have children, I’ll just adopt one” plan.
He was meant to be my son. He feels like my son. He is my son.
Not everyone is called to adopt, and I totally get that. Adoption can be challenging depending on the age of the child, attachment, and all the emotions that go along with it.
Regardless of all the challenges, it is a very special way to build your family. When I look at Baby Delight, I don’t see an “adopted baby”. All I see is my son. Sure, we don’t favor too much physically… except the hair. 😉
I don’t even notice that he has an awesome tan that I don’t have, and the thought never crosses my mind that I didn’t birth him.
I can’t tell you if my love for him is “different” than my love for a biological child would be considering I’ve never had biological children. I can tell you that I love him so much it hurts. I know I would give my life for him. I’m pretty sure that is how you would love a biological child, or at least how you should love them.
This is why I can be thankful for my infertility. Thankful that God brought me a son through adoption, because it was His perfect plan!
Have you ever thought about adoption?
What other questions do you have about adopting? I’m compiling a list for a adoption Q&A post later this month!
